How to Clean a Glass Ceramic Cooktop Without Scratching It (Guide for Cleaners)
In this article
To clean a glass ceramic cooktop without scratching it: let it cool, wipe off loose crumbs, apply a cooktop cleaner, lift burnt-on food with a scraper held almost flat and finish with a dry microfiber cloth. For stubborn stains, a baking soda and water paste left for 15 minutes works wonders.
It's one of the first things a client notices in a kitchen: streaks or white rings stand out right away. Here's the method that works on almost every glass cooktop.
What you need
- Glass ceramic cooktop cleaner (cream or liquid)
- Cooktop razor scraper
- Microfiber cloths (one damp, one dry)
- Baking soda
- Gloves
Step by step
- Let it cool completely. Cleaning a hot surface bakes the product on, leaves marks and can burn you. Exception: if something sugary spilled (syrup, jam), carefully remove it as soon as you safely can, because sugar can pit the glass as it cools.
- Wipe away loose debris with a soft cloth or non-scratch sponge.
- Apply the cooktop cleaner. A small amount directly on the surface. It's made to cut grease without scratching.
- Use the scraper on burnt-on spots. Hold it almost flat, at a 30–45 degree angle, and push gently. Never use the corner of the blade.
- Buff with a dry microfiber cloth to remove cleaner residue and water spots. This is where the shine comes back.
- Stains that won't budge: make a paste of baking soda and a little water, leave it for 15 minutes, wipe gently with the damp cloth and buff again.
Tips to keep it looking new
- A quick wipe after cooking prevents buildup.
- Lift pots, don't slide them: rough bottoms scratch the glass.
- Clean spills as soon as the cooktop cools so they don't burn on.
What if it's an induction cooktop?
You clean it the same way: it's the same glass ceramic surface. Only two things change:
- The surface gets less hot (the heat is generated in the pan), so spills burn less and come off more easily. Still, wait for it to cool: the glass heats up from the pan.
- Many induction cooktops have touch controls: use a barely damp cloth and, if it has a cleaning lock or child lock, turn it on so you don't switch on a zone by accident.
For cleaners: how to include it in your service
- In a standard clean, the cooktop is part of the kitchen: surface clean and shine.
- In a deep clean or move-out, include scraping burnt-on food and treating stains. It's one of the reasons those cleans cost more.
- If the cooktop is in really bad shape (months of burnt layers), let the client know first and charge it separately. In AgendaQuote you can create an extra with your own price (for example, "Heavy cooktop buildup") and add it to the quote.
- Take before and after photos: when you close the service in the app, the photos go into the PDF receipt and protect you from complaints.
